Shinbashi has quite a few places famous for lunch, but I’d say this one and Maihama are the standouts.
The front entrance
From the outside it looks a bit run-down.
Taimeshi set meal
The name Uwajima is a place in Ehime Prefecture that’s famous for taimeshi, so I guess that shows how confident they are in theirs. I ordered it and the portion was just right, with what felt like an endless amount of sea bream sitting in a broth a bit like Korean mulhoe (cold raw fish soup). Satisfaction level: off the charts. On top of that, the thing in the middle that looks like tempura (it’s actually jakoten, a fried fish cake) is fried right in front of you, and it’s superb. Do try it.
Close-up of the sea bream
At around 1,200 yen it’s a little pricey for lunch, but with this level of satisfaction it’d be fine to bring a client along. It is a bit shabby, though, so I’d only bring someone who really loves their food.
