Orimine Bakers in Tsukiji

There are lots of good places to eat around Tsukiji Market. Beyond the inner and outer markets, they spread across the street and into Shintomicho, Kobikicho and so on. I guess it’s because it’s close to Ginza, the rent is cheap and the market is right there. It’s a lot like how the good restaurants have been spreading from Yeonnam-dong out to Mangwon-dong lately. Call it the greater Ginza area.

There’s a famous bakery across from Tsukiji Market, and I went there often on weekend mornings.

Stepping inside..

A McIntosh amp and a pair of Tannoy Autograph Mini speakers greet you. The sound was so vivid it surprised me.

Entrance

It’s not a big place. No seating inside. But the design is well done. Even the bags were pretty.

Dark cherry Danish

Tasty. The price isn’t bad either.

One thing I’ve noticed since coming to Japan: even a neighborhood bakery has a high level of design.

Just what a neighborhood bakery should look like.

Cheap and cute, so I bought one every time I came.

Baby octopus focaccia

Well seasoned and the ingredients are fresh. Just what you’d expect from a Tsukiji bakery.

There’s a saba (mackerel) sandwich, a tuna sandwich and a tamago (egg) sandwich.

The saba sandwich is the famous one, but the taste was, hmm. So-so..

Shirasu focaccia

Good enough for a meal.

Decent quality.

A bit pricey, but the taste is definitely there. Buy one and it makes a nice weekend snack.

Japanese bakeries are so good that I can barely remember what Korean bakeries were like anymore..
