A Stroll Along Gyeongnidan-gil in Itaewon, With a Bakery Stop

Lately I have picked up a habit of stopping by a bakery to buy bread every time I go out. After wondering where to go, I headed to Gyeongnidan-gil, which is supposedly very hot these days. I figured there would be a bakery there somewhere.

A view of Yongsan

More buildings than before, maybe? Everything is changing so fast everywhere these days that I cannot keep up.

There really used to be nothing here..

Namsan

The view of Namsan has not changed.

The old entrance to Gyeongnidan-gil

This side used to be Gyeongnidan-gil, but now the entrance is over by Street Churros. The area with Magpie, Don Charly and Friend Chicken does not seem to have changed much, but the other side has changed completely, which surprised me.

Inside the real Gyeongnidan-gil

The whole inner part has been developed. Cafes and dessert shops are lined up one after another, and it was not the Gyeongnidan-gil I knew. You could have told me it was Hongdae and I would have believed you.

The bakery

Just as I expected, a bakery had opened. Judging by the sign, I think the shop’s name is simply Ppang, which means bread. Sorry if I am wrong.

This is roughly the kind of bread they were selling.

Roughly this kind of bread..

Cakes too

And scones..

One thing unique to this place: they sell day-old bread at a discount. I thought that was a pretty good idea.

As you can see from the photos, this place does a good job, but compared with bakeries in other neighborhoods it is not especially distinctive. The chocolate campagne, though, was absolutely delicious. The balance of chocolate and bread was just right. There are no competing bakeries on Gyeongnidan-gil yet, but the neighborhood itself is such a newly developed area that it still feels a bit unsettled. If you visit with that in mind, I think it is a decent place.
