I got word that there was a place in Yeonhui-dong selling freshly baked galettes, so I went. I have fond memories of the galettes that came out at 8 in the morning at Maison de Zoé in Cheongdam-dong, but once Zoé stopped doing bread, there was no longer anywhere in Korea doing a proper galette. It is nice to see distinctive bakeries like this keep popping up in every neighborhood.
The front entrance
Calling the location Hongdae is a stretch; it is quite a walk. Even from Yeonnam-dong you have to go a long way in, almost as far as Mokran. It sits right in the middle of a residential area where you would never expect to find a bakery.
Bread schedule
They said 9:30, so I timed my arrival for that, but the galettes and the chaussons aux pommes came out a bit late. I remember it being around 10:30. If you live in the neighborhood, that is probably just the right timing for a weekend breakfast. If you are making a round trip from far away, it is a little awkward..
Bread
They looked decent, but when it comes to croissants, Seoul already has Old Croissant Factory, so it is hard to justify coming all the way out to Yeonhui-dong for them.
Croissants
They looked delicious.
A sample croissant
While I was waiting for the galettes to come out, they brought me a sample. It tasted fine.
Water
I was sitting in the very small eat-in space and they gave me a glass of water on the house too. The owner couple were really friendly.
Photos of Paris
I would love to go, but who knows when I will have the time.. actually, these days it is not just time or money; all sorts of other reasons have piled up, and getting away on a trip anywhere is not easy.
The galettes, finally out
They looked so pretty that they had been on my mind ever since I saw them on Instagram, but when I actually ate one.. hmm.. it was a little different from what I had pictured. There was something like sweet potato inside, and it was tasty enough.
Chausson aux pommes
The chausson aux pommes I bought along with the galette also looked really delicious. And of course, like the galette, it was fresh out of the oven.
Inside the chausson aux pommes
Walking down the chilly morning streets of Yeonhui-dong, I took a bite of the chausson aux pommes, and it was delicious: piping hot apple loaded with cinnamon. A great find, beyond my expectations. Somehow it brought back memories of buying steamed buns or dalgona candy in front of the school as a kid. Now that I am older I no longer eat that kind of junk, but here I am strolling down the street eating a slightly more refined chausson aux pommes. Tastes may evolve, but the fundamentals do not seem to change.
Brownie
The brownie they gave me on the house was good too. This is a place with real skill. It is a bit far to get to, but I would like to visit again some weekend morning.
