There are a few places I absolutely have to visit whenever I’m in Tokyo, and tri-R Shibatani is one of them. It’s a place I just love.

Canelé

The best canelé I’ve ever had was as good as ever today. The only shame is that the flavor changes after about four hours, so I can’t bring any back to Korea.

Curry bread

While I was eating the canelé, a batch of freshly fried curry bread came out, so I ordered one without a second thought. Fresh out of the fryer, the crispy crust was ridiculously good, but the chewy texture only comes through once it cools down a bit. I think the balance would have been perfect if I had eaten it about five minutes later.

Getting excited over a single curry bread was one of the small joys of living in Japan, and I’m glad that even living in Korea I can still enjoy little moments like that once in a while. I promised myself I’d come back and eat here on my next visit too.
