What I Ate in Malaysia

At last, this is the final post of my Malaysia trip. Almost everything we ate in Malaysia was Chinese food. Maybe that’s because it was a group tour. The taste? About the level of an ordinary Chinese restaurant. Thankfully, nothing was ever so bad that I couldn’t eat it. You can’t really judge the level of Malaysian food from the photos I post, but I’m short on time and a bit lazy, so I’m just putting them all together here.

Soup

malay foods

Just ordinary Chinese style. Seems you shouldn’t expect much in the way of genuinely Malaysian food…

Stir-fried squid

Fish dish

malay foods

Sweet and sour pork, I think.

Shrimp

malay foods

Looks like it was stir-fried with miso, and it goes nicely with rice. Probably because I’m used to doenjang sauce.

Tofu

malay foods

The tofu and the dishes in general feel almost the same as in Korea, Japan and China. Similar ingredients and a similar culture, I suppose. Honestly I was hoping for something a bit Arabic -_- or Indian, so it was a letdown that it was all Chinese food. Probably tailored to the tastes of Japanese tourists.

Clam dish

Noodles

malay foods

If it’s not good, it’s just not good.

Watermelon

malay foods

Fruit tastes better in Japan.

Another soup

malay foods

The rice was always indica, and always fried rice…

malay foods

Stir-fried cauliflower

malay foods

Curry

malay foods

Slightly Thai-style, and honestly this is the kind of thing I wanted to eat. You can get Chinese food anywhere in Southeast Asia, Japan and Korea included. But that’s exactly why it’s a safe choice, too. And I guess that’s why you end up eating it so often.

What was this again…

malay foods

Shrimp makes another appearance

malay foods

Seeing the same dish come out again and again, it must be an ingredient that’s plentiful around here.

All sorts of dishes…

malay foods

This is Peking duck

malay foods

Buns filled with char siu, I think…

malay foods

Was it boiled pork (suyuk)… or something else…

malay foods

Noodles

malay foods

Dim sum

malay foods

Just so-so.

These are the ingredients for a dish called steamboat.

malay foods

You could call it a hot pot.

More ingredients

The hot pot

malay foods

Jasmine tea

malay foods

The pouring performance was a work of art…

Noodles to finish…

malay foods

The taste? Hot pot flavor?

malay foods

Japan does hot pot best… for the name, this fell rather short.

An Australian Chardonnay we enjoyed

malay foods

This one’s pretty good. I looked up the price and it’s not expensive either… I’d like to stock up on a few bottles if I can find it.
