This time I booked a place in Roppongi. Food, shopping and sightseeing are all packed into one area, so when I can’t be bothered to travel far, nowhere beats Roppongi. Most tourists are probably better off staying somewhere with good transport links like Shinjuku, but I’ve already been pretty much everywhere.
Morning walk
Lots of people were out on a continental-style jog. It really feels like a holiday at the Hills.
Breakfast at La Boutique de Joël Robuchon..
Maybe it’s my age, but these days I can eat low-calorie diet food, yet I just can’t skip meals. So I headed to Roppongi for breakfast. I had a lunch appointment soon, so I meant to keep it light, but the bread was so pretty I lost my head and ended up paying for three things… Well, one of them was a nama caramel, so it’s not that big a deal..
Rouge cake
Love at first sight. At this level it’s practically a work of art. True to Joël Robuchon, it wasn’t just pretty to look at. Inside it has three layers, packed with pistachio, cassis, cranberry and so on.
Sandwich
This one got me at first sight too, so I had no choice but to buy it. A sandwich that satisfies both a gourmet’s tongue and an artist’s eye — that’s Joël Robuchon’s style for you . It was a bit much for a snack and big enough to be a full meal, but I’ll just have to burn that off. That’s what the weight training is for. It was loaded with tomato, mozzarella and basil, but above all it was the bread that impressed me. While I was busy working through this long sandwich on the outdoor café terrace, a Roppongi girl glanced at me and walked past with a smile I couldn’t read. I guess taking out a sandwich and a cake at the same time first thing in the morning looked odd..
The nama caramel was pretty good too. It was cheap, so I bought some as omiyage and I’ll bring them along to our next meetup.

These days there’s not much for me to do in Shinjuku anymore. It’s just hectic.. Places like Roppongi/Azabu seem to suit me better. Except for the rent, that is.

Hanabatake Bokujo Cafe
I’d heard it went under, but it’s still here. Anyway.. it’s a caramel shop that’s popular these days. It’s a bit bitter, and I wondered if it had caffeine in it, so I don’t really eat it much.
Tokyo Midtown, Roppongi
Only the lower floors are open to the general public. Those alone are plenty glamorous, but the real Midtown must be upstairs. To get up there, though, you need to be earning serious money.. I’m sure my big break will come someday.
