I went and had the naengmyeon at Byeokje Galbi, said to be the best Pyeongyang naengmyeon in the country. At 11,000 won + 10% VAT + 10% service charge, the price is also the best in the country, as you’d expect.
The interior is very modern for a Korean barbecue place. The staff are as polite and friendly as at an Italian or French restaurant. Well, of course… you pay a separate service charge, after all. The cheapest meat on the menu, yangnyeom galbi, was 46,000 won per serving + 20%… I was about to order it, but my companion stopped me, so I just had the naengmyeon.

Today’s main event: Pyeongyang naengmyeon
It’s the best. The noodles have less impact than the pure buckwheat noodles at Woo Lae Oak, but in aroma and springiness they’re very true to the basics. The broth was the best I’ve ever tasted. Rich without being heavy, with a clean, refreshing finish. Every one of the toppings worked well together, too. With the price and the location I probably won’t come often, but if someone’s treating, I’d definitely go again.

Who knew you’d get dessert with naengmyeon… I’m satisfied. It’s a bit pricey just for naengmyeon, but if you get top-level naengmyeon, enjoy dessert, and can spend a quiet time chatting, this price isn’t bad at all.
I’d like to go again… it was a lovely time.
