Peanut karinto
It tastes a lot like Korea’s Mat Dongsan peanut snack. This one might well be the original.
Almond senbei supervised by Tanita Shokudo
A senbei with an almond flavour to it – a bit plain, but decent enough.
Kodaimai (ancient rice) senbei
This is another senbei I really love – the taste is a bit like nurungji, scorched rice, mixed with puffed rice crackers. It makes me happy that even a supermarket carries senbei this good.
Organic peeled chestnuts
Decent enough.
Soybean noodles, rich bolognese
Noodles made from soybeans, and they are just about okay.
Soybean noodles, shrimp and salt yakisoba
This one is decent too.
Rainier cherries from Costco
So Costco in Japan sells Rainier cherries too. They are so good that they are worth having once a year.
Handmade sandwiches at the supermarket
They looked good, so I took a photo.
Lotte Custard Cake
It says the flavour is the catalana from Karon Coffee Sabo in Sapporo; either way, there is a thick jam inside and it is delicious. Quite a few of the seasonal Custard Cake editions are good.
Pizza Potato, Genovese flavour
A pizza-flavoured potato chip, and it was just about okay.
Otsumami Pretz, smoked cheese flavour
Pretty good with a drink.
Homemade jjajangmyeon
I made it myself, but it came out rather well. The one problem was prepping the meat – maybe because I used a fatty cut, it would not slice cleanly.
Yaizu katsuo ramen
This series is a soy sauce broth with a strong katsuobushi umami, so it is genuinely delicious. I find myself eating it again and again.
Menma
I bought canned menma, and it turned out to be enormous. To think a supermarket had menma like this..
Zha cai
At a Chinese restaurant you normally only ever see zha cai shredded thin, but this one comes in whole pieces.
What was inside
The menma is extra large, and while the bite is great, the flavour does not soak all the way in. The zha cai, on the other hand, was genuinely delicious – a great bite, plus a faint hint of Chinese spice, which made it wonderful. This one I recommend without reservation.
Usukawa hamburg and ketchup buns
In a way, this really does taste rather like a hamburger.
Potato chips that taste just like garlic shrimp
It was so-so.
Chocomint Almond (from the Cheese Almond line)
If you like mint chocolate, I think you would enjoy these.
Nissin Raoh, fugu dashi shio
A pufferfish broth ramen, and I enjoyed it quite a lot.
