Osechi is when you have your New Year’s food delivered from a good restaurant, on the grounds that nobody should have to bother cooking over the year-end and New Year holidays. It costs a fair bit, but having to put meals on the table on top of everything else during a holiday is a pain, so you could call it a very good custom..

It’s a generous amount, plenty for the whole family. Apparently it’s osechi ordered from an old ryokan in Kyoto, and it tastes pretty good too.
