I mostly work in Gangnam, and since I’m usually the one going to see a friend who lives north of the river, we end up meeting around Chungmuro a lot. Meeting in the middle means the trip home feels fair for both of us.
Today we went to a perfectly ordinary hoe (sashimi) place.
It looks like an ordinary hoe restaurant however you look at it.
They were making corn butter and buchimgae pancakes right out front.
The menu
Order one flounder and all sorts of things come out with it – the classic Korean hoe restaurant system. Drinks included, around 30,000 won a head gets you a good meal. Hunting down famous restaurants is fun, but lately I’ve come to like places like this too.
The standard side dishes
Corn butter
I guess you could say it just doesn’t feel like a Korean hoe place unless something like this turns up.
Flounder
Simply good.
Beondegi (silkworm pupae)
A great snack with soju.
Saury
They keep bringing out freebies.
Buchimgae
Eaten straight off the pan while it’s hot, it’s delicious.
The sign
It just turned out to be a nice spot for a drink after a long while. They say Chungmuro is full of great restaurants, but the lines are long everywhere and there are smells and hygiene worries too, so somewhere like this feels about right to me.
