Get off at Arashiyama Station and it’s about a ten-minute walk to the bridge that Arashiyama is known for.

I’d actually never been to the far side of the bridge, and so this is what it looks like.. No great loss if you skip it, really..

The anglers’ rods looked a good five metres long — maybe they were after ayu? And the birds follow people around so closely it’s almost uncanny.

I’d always assumed the boats were for tour groups.. but for 1,800 yen they’ll rent you a three- or four-person boat for an hour. The duck- and swan-shaped boats are the easy ones to ride, but what they rent here is the classic row-it-yourself kind. Not the boat in the photo — a much smaller one. Still, it had been ages since I’d been in a boat, and it was fun. It would have been even better if it hadn’t been so hot, though at least it was overcast, so there was no direct sun. Honestly, I used to wonder who comes all the way to Arashiyama to ride a boat, and it turned out to be me.. It was a pretty good experience.

They say it’s a famous place, though I have no idea when I’ll ever get a chance to go.
