A round-up of the things I bought at convenience stores.
Beyond Tofu Bar
Hmm.. this one had a kind of dull, pasty taste.
Canned mackerel simmered in tomato
I end up buying any unusual can I come across, and this one tastes pretty good.
Canned mackerel simmered in curry
This one was decent too.
Guilt-free karaage made from soybeans
Surprisingly, this really does taste like karaage.
It even sort of looks like karaage..
The chew is more like a rice cracker, but there’s a hint of lemon and the seasoning is properly done. I’ll take an experiment like this any day.
Rich cheese with a mysterious new texture
I really liked this one too.
Like this..
It’s cheese puffed up with air like a Homerun Ball, and the texture is fun.
Oishii Saba, miso-ni
It’s gold for a reason — the best of the series. A very important source of protein.
Yamagata Daihyo La France milk gelato
Perfectly fine.
Kokubata
Rum raisins on fermented butter, so there’s no way it isn’t good.
Cheese Dessert, rich mango
A seasonal cheese dessert, and it tastes really good.
Creamy Chee-kama, black truffle
There’s cream cheese and truffle inside the sausage, and it’s unexpectedly good. The truffle flavor is properly there. I bought it at FamilyMart and wanted to buy it again, but I haven’t been able to find it since.
Yotsuba buttermilk yogurt
Delicious. Most of Yotsuba’s dairy products taste good.
Chicken skin simmered in miso
It was just so-so.
Yoshimuraya Yasai-batake tonkotsu shoyu soup
The broth is rich and there are plenty of dried vegetables in it. At this level I don’t think Yoshimuraya’s reputation takes much of a hit.
Seasoned akagai
Not as good as I expected.
Navel oranges
Navel oranges really are delicious.
Sumire miso wonton soup
The soup is rich.
The wontons
Completely different from the taste at the main shop.. but it’s edible enough.
Inaba chicken and Thai curry
Surprisingly, the can tasted like a fairly proper Thai curry. For a can, that’s satisfying.
The contents
Horse mackerel nanbanzuke
Supermarkets sell plenty of nanbanzuke, and this was about that level.
Hanabatake Bokujo burrata
While I wasn’t looking, burrata started turning up in just about every supermarket. It really is delicious. The price isn’t bad either, so I buy some and eat it with tomato and olive oil, and the taste is superb.
Freeze-dried durian
It really does taste like durian.
Creamy 6P cheese with Hokkaido camembert
This one tastes good.
Famima the Melonpan
This one was a bit of a letdown. It doesn’t taste premium.
FamilyMart’s mala peanuts
This is quite a treat — the peanuts are the peanuts, but there are these chili peppers in there, and they aren’t that hot, so it goes well with beer.
Shumai
It’s shumai from a brand called Aji no Mimatsu, and it’s unexpectedly light and tasty.
Curry nanban iwashi..
It was just so-so.
Oishii Saba, shoyu-ni
Same brand as the miso-ni, but the miso-ni is better. The gold wasn’t for nothing.
