DesserTree, a Dessert Specialist in Apgujeong, and the Bread at L’atelier Monique

I wanted something a little special, so I went to DesserTree. The desserts you get at an ordinary restaurant in Korea are not exactly high level, but the desserts here are up there. I have known this place for a long time, and it is as popular as ever.

The front entrance

It is located near Dosan Park. There was a workshop downstairs, though I cannot quite remember whether it was always there.

Coffee

They had a set menu, so I ordered that. Considering what comes out, the set is the better deal.

Sour ice cream with fig

The tartness and richness of the sour ice cream were impressive. Purely on taste, it was the best of everything that came out that day. It is not sold on its own; it comes when you order the set.

Omelette norvégienne with two kinds of ice cream

This is one of the signature items here, but compared to how beautiful it looks, the taste is not quite that spectacular. The Grand Marnier is delicious, though. I ordered it on purpose for my companion, who was visiting for the first time.

White chocolate panna cotta with watermelon sorbet

dessertree

It is a summer-only item, and it is just so pretty. The taste was fantastic too, of course. One thing to note: the point is to eat the panna cotta together with the pastry part on top; eaten separately it may not impress much. Their sense for dessert is really excellent. I doubt there is any other place in Korea that does it like this. Now that it has turned cold, the watermelon sorbet must be off the menu, so I am glad I got to have it one last time. Autumn will bring its own autumn menu, I am sure.

Petits fours

I forget the exact names, but I believe they were a mugwort tiramisu, a grapefruit jelly, and a Valrhona chocolate cake. Three desserts, each good enough to serve as a main, so ordering the set was definitely the right call. This is not a cheap place, but the satisfaction is worth more than the price. I was so happy this time that I will probably find myself back here at some point.

Not as a second round, but for the next morning’s breakfast, we moved on to L’atelier Monique.

Sweet potato croissant

They had an autumn croissant out, so I bought one.

They really do make them well.

Potato baguette and fruit bread

The filling was tasty too, so it made an excellent meal.

Hunting down newly opened restaurants is such a hassle that these days I only go to places I have known for a long time or places vetted by someone I know well. I expect this pattern will continue. Well, I am perfectly satisfied without chasing new places, so personally I do not mind, but there is not much to post on the blog, so the uploads will probably get a bit sparse. Once the year-end and New Year holidays are over, the backlog will build up again. I am curious what kind of gatherings await me this year-end. And whether I will survive them..
