There are a few places in Korea worth going to when you want Japanese-style desserts, and the best of them is probably Mon Chouchou in Garosu-gil. ROYCE’ is too expensive, and the other shops aim for a Japanese feel but are not fully Japanese in style. The shop is near my place, and I suddenly got a craving for Japanese desserts, so last month I was at Mon Chouchou almost every week.

Jellies and cakes

The photo shows the summer menu, and it has now switched to the autumn menu. The Mont Blanc looked good too, but I have no photo of it. The signature roll cake is delicious, but I need to try the other items as well.

The day’s selection

A cream puff, a jelly and a Happy Pouch. Not in the photo, but I bought a pudding too.

Cream puff

It is fairly cheap and tastes fine. Compared with the rest of the menu here, though, it is not exceptionally good or particularly distinctive.

Happy Pouch

It was almost as good as the roll cake. The cream was soft and smooth, and it goes really well with the crepe. There are Happy Pouches with pineapple or apple in them too, but I would recommend trying the plain one first.

Jelly

This kind of dessert is exactly Japanese style, and I cannot remember whether anywhere else sells it. It may be the only place in Korea. The taste, of course, was satisfying. It is exactly the taste I used to have in Japan.

Pudding

It seems good puddings are coming out in Korea these days too, but the original is still excellent. Quite a few other dessert shops do pudding as well, but I think this is the only place that makes such a perfectly Japanese-style pudding.

I also bought a shortcake, and it was delicious, packed with the same cream they use in the Dojima Roll. Mon Chouchou is a truly precious place for tasting Japanese desserts in Korea, so I expect I will keep coming back often.
