A friend came to visit and asked me to show him a sushi place, but not many are open on Sundays. The one I picked was Manten Sushi in the basement of Marunouchi Brick Square.
Draft beer first, of course
We asked for the omakase course. Creative sushi with real flair just kept coming.
Shusse-uo, a fish that changes its name as it grows
I cannot remember the name, but it was delicious.
Maguro zuke
Tuna marinated in soy sauce.. perfect with a beer.
Abalone
A whole one per person. Great with a drink, as always.
Ikura
Really fresh salmon roe, so of course it tasted great. The way it is served is a little fusion-style, but it works.
Mozuku
I have rarely seen seaweed served at a sushi place, so this was unusual. I liked it.
Seaweed soup
One more kind of seaweed.
Aji
Hikarimono, the shiny fish, can never taste bad. Come to think of it, though, unlike Edomae sushi, which starts with white fish, the order here is all over the place. Not that it makes any difference when you are eating.
Sea bream
Delicious.
Ebi
Well.. it was good..
Tako
Little side dishes for your drink keep showing up in between.
Nihonshu
With snacks like these, sake goes better than beer.
I think this was suzuki, sea bass..
Goes down without any trouble at all.
Sea bream
Starting to feel full by now.
Junsai
Junsai, water shield, since it is summer.
Makizushi
Stuffed with onion, and that turned out to be a real treat.
Two kinds of maguro
One was caught offshore and one in the open ocean, they said. They did taste different, but beyond both being delicious I cannot remember much.
Hamaguri
The clear broth was refreshing, a real hangover cure
Anago and tamago
The anago was better at the Edomae sushi places, but in terms of overall satisfaction I doubt there are many places that match Manten Sushi.
Kanpyo maki
You roll it yourself.
Dessert
Exactly one grape each. After eating until I was about to burst, a dessert this size was just right.
For satisfaction relative to price, it would not be easy to find a sushi place that matches this one.
