I had long heard the rumour that one of the best soba shops in all of Tokyo was tucked away in a corner of Asakusa, and I already knew exactly where it was, but every time I went it was closed, so I only got to visit now. They are open from 11 in the morning until 4 in the afternoon, and closed on Mondays and Tuesdays, which makes the timing surprisingly hard to get right.
Asahi beer
Beer first, of course. A drink at a soba shop always feels a little more special.
Miso
A spicy miso comes out as the otoshi.
Soba tororo
Tororo is grated yam, known for its slippery, silky texture. Dipping the bouncy, firm soba into it, the freshness really comes through.
Kakiage soba
This place is also very famous for its tempura, and the quality was beyond what I expected. That crunchy texture is on the level of a top-class tempura restaurant. A little while ago I visited a soba shop called Tsune and thought that having somewhere this good near home was hard to beat, but this place goes a level beyond. Who would have thought a truly first-rate soba shop was right on my doorstep.. If only the opening hours were not so short I would come all the time, but sadly they do not open in the evening.
Sobayu
And as always, I finished with sobayu. The Asakusa gourmet expedition continues.
