Asakusa is a tourist district with a long history, so it has plenty of famous old restaurants. Daikokuya is one of those tourist-spot institutions, and while it is not cheap, the tempura that came out was delicious.
Somen
Somen made from fish paste, served with okra and egg tofu. It looks simple but tastes good.
The table setting
A generous heap of grated daikon to go into the ponzu.
Tempura
This is what the 2,000 yen set meal looks like. It is not the delicate style of Tempura Osaka, but fried rough and hearty. The big shrimp tempura in particular was ideal. There is nothing refined about it, but maybe because the ingredients are fresh, it is really delicious. Being fried food, though, you get pretty full as you eat.
White rice
The main culprit for weight gain, but they cook the rice so well that you cannot help but eat it. Nothing for it but to finish it all and go running hard..
Tendon
This is the dish that represents the place. It comes out really rough and hearty, but as expected the sauce makes it a bit soggy. Some people must love this style, but it seems I am not one of them..
Suimono
The clear soup is tasty too. As you would expect from a popular old favourite, it was a satisfying meal. Asakusa is full of famous places like this, so I should set aside a day sometime and make the rounds.
