There are plenty of places I want to go back to, but not many that I actually end up going back to. I had been meaning to try Bistro Yountville one of these days, and I am only now finally getting around to it. The lighting is dim, so the photos came out really badly. That is exactly why I prefer visiting fine dining restaurants during the day.
Bread
These days it feels like bread everywhere has levelled up.
Onion soup
There was a familiar item on the menu so I ordered it, and out came a familiar dish. It is nice that it is warm, but for a French place to have no personality that sets it apart from everywhere else feels like something close to a sin.
Beet salad
I understand that this is the kind of dish you get when the concept is a bistro, but it is a bit of a letdown all the same. The taste was just okay, too..
Foie gras
This one was also just so-so..
Scallop
.. yeah, just so-so..
Bouillabaisse
It was warm, at least, but I cannot tell the difference between haemultang and bouillabaisse.
Beef steak
They did use a decent cut of meat.
Creme brulee
Perfectly edible, nothing more.
Mille-feuille
Mille-feuille is never easy to eat in the first place (it just will not cut cleanly..), and this one was no exception. My mouth is too small to pull off the swallow-it-in-one-bite technique..
Petits fours
It is not that the food is bad, but across everything I ate that day I could not see any personality that belonged to this place alone. And because I turned up late, the low-temperature-cooked pork belly had already sold out. You can get by just fine on food without personality, but anyway, well.. the gathering itself was a success, so I will call that a good thing.
