I’d heard there was a good-value sushi place in Marunouchi Brick Square, so I dropped by. This one also has a crazy-high Tabelog score, which felt a bit rigged to me, but someone who’d actually been said it was good, so I went with some friends. I’m in Japan, after all, so I have to eat sushi at least once before I leave.
The entrance
It’s in the basement restaurant floor, and maybe because the building is new, the interior is clean and a lot of the shops look good. But the frontage is casual for a sushi place, so I went in half excited, half worried about what kind of sushi we’d get.
Wakame
Seaweed to start. Not a bad beginning. Good against radiation too -_-..
Ocha
which I can’t drink, but I’m posting it anyway.
Gari
A sushi essential, right?
Kaisendon, limited to 10 bowls
My friend ordered the kaisendon, which is lunch only. You can’t see it well in the photo, but the dark sauce soaked deep into the rice was really delicious. The fish quality is great too. Outstanding for the price. I guess it’s limited to 10 because it’s basically a loss leader. If they sold only this for 1,000 yen there’d be no profit in it.
Chutoro, saba, avocado
Out comes the 3,150-yen omakase I ordered. The avocado is a bit fusion. It tasted just so-so too. The rest of the neta weren’t top-tier, but pretty good.
Miso soup with rock seaweed
It’s packed with rock seaweed, though you can’t see it right away. This is the best miso soup I’ve ever had. I ended up getting three refills.
Water glass
Even the glass looks kind of fusion.
Ikura
It comes not as gunkan but as a little rice bowl. There was something tangy, like a pickle, mixed in, but it didn’t taste especially good. The presentation is flashy to the point of overkill; maybe that’s why the place is popular. Whenever people who don’t care about taste rate restaurants, places like this always seem to end up at the top.
Tsukemono
Pretty. Taste: so-so
Engawa, akagai, akami
About average.
Awabi, uni, ebi
Out comes awabi, a pricey ingredient. Taste-wise it’s okay, not bad.
Anago, unagi
Same with these
Maki
Finishing with maki.. As a meal the portion isn’t bad. Not stuffed, though. At this price, Yoshino Sushi would be way better. But since this is Marunouchi, the big plus is that you can head right next door to loads of dessert shops for round two. Cacao Sampaka, Echire, and so on
Health vinegar
It comes as dessert, but it doesn’t taste particularly good.
Overall the sushi itself isn’t outstanding, but the interior is clean and the miso soup in the course was really delicious, and that’s what stayed with me. If I go again I’ll order the kaisendon limited to 10 a day. It’s an excellent choice for the price.
