Since our foodie expedition crew had finally made it to Japan, we had to eat the signature dishes: unagi, soba, sushi and ramen. So for the morning of day two we picked an eel restaurant.
Two-layer unagi bowl
I think this may be the best thing on the menu here. There’s more eel hidden inside the rice under the top layer, so you can eat as much eel as you could ever want. The eel being grilled rough and rugged is another hallmark of this place. Eel of this level really isn’t something you can get just anywhere.
Eel rolled omelette
I ate it after taking pictures, so it had gone completely cold. So sad.
Grilled eel liver
I only ate this after it had cooled down too, so it didn’t taste that great. Sad.
Suimono (clear soup)
There’s a cherry blossom floating in it.
The eel inside the rice
A mouthful of sweet, charcoal-grilled eel flavour. Being two layers it was a bit much, but who knows when a chance like this will come around again, so I had to eat hard. Actually, that day we brought along a sweet wine to go with the eel and drank it, but looking back, I don’t have a single photo of it -_- Oh well..
