Shizuoka Bento in Front of Shizuoka Station

A lot of Shizuoka’s good places to eat are clustered around the station, so I went to check them out.

Sokuhai, a liquor shop I spotted on the way

This place is fairly well known.

Some bottles I shot inside

They’ve got a few rare finds. There’s Yamazaki 12, and I can see Yoichi 10 too. Stumbling on stuff like this while wandering around is one of the fun parts of being in Japan. That said, the prices aren’t exactly cheap. For this money you could buy a well-known, proven whisky instead… Is Yoichi 10 really tastier than Johnnie Walker Blue?

A building I snapped while walking past

Shizuoka bento.

Apparently it’s a food store for pros, so I should stop by sometime… I’m guessing it’s something like Hanamasa.

Shizuoka Bento

This place turned out to be pretty popular. Their big seller seems to be the “amiyaki” bento, topped with meat grilled over an open flame.

The menu

I went late, so pretty much everything except the basic bento was sold out. But buying the basic bento was the plan all along, so no problem. The price is better than I expected; 770 yen is a real bargain. I bought two to take home as omiyage.

Surprisingly, I kept seeing signs in Korean and Chinese too, so I guess it’s popular with visitors from abroad… and honestly, what Korean doesn’t love pork belly? It’s bound to suit Korean tastes.

The bento

It’s a decent amount of food.

Opening it up…

Shizuoka bento.

It tastes pretty good. The meat is a bit thin, but it’s well seasoned. It feels tailor-made for eating on the shinkansen. It’d probably be even better warm. If I lived in Shizuoka, I’d be a regular.
