Beijing is the capital of China, so regardless of whether Beijing cuisine is actually delicious or not, it somehow feels like the right choice for entertaining guests.
This is the place
Today’s drink
It’s a baijiu called Yonghua Zhencang. It’s made in the same area as Moutai and is a sauce-aroma type, but the soy-sauce-like taste and smell weren’t that strong. Since it comes in a one-liter bottle, it’s apparently used mostly for gatherings. Honestly… it looks impressive, but the price isn’t all that high, and the taste isn’t particularly distinctive either. China seems to be overflowing with liquors that look grander than they are…
Salad
The dragon fruit in this was incredibly sweet.
Boiled meat
I think it’s boiled duck.
Soup
Offal
Tomato soup
Peking duck
Nicely cooked.
Pancakes for wrapping the duck
Stir-fried meat
Fish
Something like naan
Stir-fried broccoli
Dumplings
Soup
Overall the food was good, and with a full liter of liquor there was plenty to drink. It was a pretty well-balanced meal.
Tea tray
I have no idea why this was in the private room, but tea trays like this are completely everyday things in China. Tea culture is far more ingrained in daily life there than we imagine. There’s a lot you just don’t know until you experience it yourself…
