I came back to the Tairan area. This was the day before leaving Shenzhen, and after wandering around only the nearby spots the whole time, this place seemed like the best of the lot.

Maybe because it was Friday, it was pretty crowded. Honestly, if I’d known it would be like this I should have come earlier, but I had no idea at the time.

The atmosphere looks great. What I didn’t know at this point was that while there were no lines at all in daylight, once it got dark the famous places had waits of at least an hour…

Come to think of it, I hadn’t had hot pot even once since coming to China… none of us middle-aged guys were interested in hot pot, apparently…

The buildings along this food street haven’t been renovated; they’ve just been left as they are. It seems to be on purpose. The ground floor of the old buildings is used for restaurants and the second floor for mahjong clubs…

I looked around here and there, planning to go into somewhere decent, but the lines were all too long, so I ended up in the place that looked the least busy. It’s a Sichuan-style skewer joint, and not exactly cheap. But they had house-brewed beer, so I ordered one, and it was pretty drinkable.

I thought ordering ten would be a huge amount, but it turned out you could easily eat ten per person. Probably even thirty a head if you tried… the people at the next table had a stack of about thirty going…

But the flavor was a bit flat, I’d say… maybe because we picked the emptiest place, it wasn’t anything special. On a weekend you really should go early and grab a table at the place with the longest line first.

Spicy beef jerky tart
This was a pretty tasty beer snack that doesn’t fill you up. You can also just pick off the jerky pieces one by one. Nice idea.
Anyway, that’s how my long Shenzhen trip comes to an end…
