When you think of Gyeyang, it’s where the Airport Railroad runs, where it links up with Incheon Subway Line 1, and where the Gyeongin Ara Waterway is. If you ride a bike, it’s the sort of place you drop by once in a while. The area is developing thanks to the Geomdan new town, but around Gyeyang station itself that’s not really the case, so there isn’t much of anything. Even so, I heard there was a bakery, so off I went.

I imagine people who keep a weekend plot need these. Which is to say this neighbourhood still has a long way to go before it counts as developed..

Starmoon Bakery

To think there was a bakery this lovely in a place like this.. Look closely and there’s a plaque saying it’s a certified reduced-sugar bakery.

The breads

They sell genuinely classic sourdough. The loaves are big and the prices are reasonable. This is a bakery that does it properly.

Rye bread and the rest..

The breads that have just come out of the oven seem to be cooling here. They all look like good quality. That day I bought a rye sourdough and a raisin and fig rye sourdough, and the rye sourdough in particular I got to eat while it was still piping hot. The crust was crisp and nutty, like scorched rice at the bottom of the pot. I found myself wondering whether rye bread was allowed to be this good. The raisin and fig rye sourdough was easy to eat too. They really do make excellent rye bread..

Ciabatta as well..

The ciabatta was nice and big and well made too.

There’s plenty to choose from. It looked like a good spot for brunch, too.

Opening hours

Apparently they started opening on Saturdays from February. Worth checking the times the bread comes out, too.

There are quite a few people out on bikes. But in winter they disappear, and that somehow makes it look even colder.

A place I noticed on the way past

It’s a grilled fish restaurant called Jabango, and it looks like it’s doing well. I’m noting it down just in case. Though the catch is that there really aren’t many places to eat around here, so that may be exactly why it’s popular..
