Whenever some interesting whisky came out, I used to just buy it, but these days I tend to try it at a bar first and then buy. There are whiskies I bought after a bar recommended them and I had a taste, and there are whiskies that never hit the retail market and only come into bars.. for all sorts of reasons, I have no choice but to visit whisky bars regularly.
The Whisky Agency Art Nouveau series Cragganmore, and a Macallan 14 Year from The Maltman.
The Macallan was a bit heavy and did not taste like a Macallan. It was fine, though. The Art Nouveau Cragganmore is a bottle that is hard to find and pretty expensive too, but the taste was kind of meh.. glad I did not buy it.. or rather, could not..
The Perfect Dram
This one I did not get to taste. Just an empty bottle.. it is a very famous bottle, and the sad lesson is that if you do not come quickly, you do not even get a taste..
Glenturret 1986
I think this might be one of the best value whiskies released this year.. it is an 80s bottle, and I believe it was under 20,000 yen. And on top of that it even tastes good! Whoever bought this hit the lottery..
XOP Clynelish
Clynelish is partly just my taste, but everything from there is delicious. This one was not bad either, but for the price, hmm..
Port Ellen
A legendary bottle that anyone in the know knows. The price is on another planet.. but it really was delicious. There is a slightly funky, musty note to it, something I doubt today’s distilleries could make.
Speyside Region
A lot of the recently released 70s Speyside bottles have gotten good reviews.. but this one was just so-so. It is an expensive bottle, so these are the ones you really should taste before buying.. but the trouble is that these days they sell out so fast you have to buy first and ask questions later..
Not from the bar, this is a Gran Centenario Reposado I drank at home
Turns out tequila can actually taste good.. I bought it after seeing it on Whiskyfun, and for the price it is excellent.
This one is a Bowmore Tempest I tried at a shop
This batch had good reviews so I gave it a try, and it is pretty good. A whirlwind of peat storms through your mouth. The problem is that there are so many whiskies to buy that I cannot afford to add this one too.
