Pierre Gagnaire Pains et Gâteaux, Roppongi

I had some free time on the weekend, so I dropped by the bakery run by Pierre Gagnaire on the 2nd floor of the ANA InterContinental Hotel in Roppongi, or more precisely Tameike-Sanno.

The front entrance

They sell both bread and cakes, and both looked top-notch. There were sandwiches off to one side too, but the prices were a bit steep. I was tempted to buy one, but my target that day was cake, so I held back.

The display case

They sell bread by the type, and there were lots of desserts like marshmallows that would make good gifts. Quite a few people were ordering more than 10,000 yen at a time.

The paper bag

I almost never take photos of paper bags, but the Pierre Gagnaire one was so luxurious I had to. Anyone seeing it would think I had bought a designer handbag.

Sakura bread

This bread actually has cherry blossom leaves in it, and it tasted a bit like sakura mochi. It is on the small side, but I enjoyed it.

The cakes

The one on the left is the Pink Panther, the one on the right is the Mont Fuji. They got a little squashed on the way home, sadly.

The design was so pretty that I simply could not resist buying it. It looks like something off a piece of women’s clothing or a handbag. A refined, fashionable dessert. Pierre Gagnaire’s sense of style really shows.

Mont Fuji

Inside it is blueberry and meringue. The white chocolate was exceptional too. A restrained, elegant sweetness. You could say it lacks impact, but I was thoroughly satisfied.

Compared to the flashy exterior, the inside was a bit plain. Probably the problem was that I had expected too much.

I had no idea there was such a good bakery in Roppongi. I will keep it in mind and visit again whenever I have a reason to go out to Roppongi.
