Baekmikye, a Hakka Restaurant in Shenzhen

I was walking past a place billed as a Hakka restaurant, so I went in. Normally I only go to chains where ordering and paying is easy and rarely try places like this, but I had joined up with someone who speaks Chinese well, so I found the courage.

I can read Chinese characters, but before coming to China I didn’t really know what “Hakka” meant. Turns out it has quite a deep history..

I’m getting used to this now. Unwrapping the packaging, sanitising and so on..

The dishes were priced a bit higher than at the chains.

Chicken dish

Chicken is said to be a Hakka speciality. But the onions were incredibly good. It made me think how wide the world is and how many different ingredients there are.

Stir-fried water spinach

Apparently a dish that often turns up at Chinese restaurants..

Tofu dish

Tofu is also said to be the essence of Hakka cooking; it was nicely seared and I enjoyed it.

There are walnuts inside, so it tastes like it would work as a snack too. They had plain white bread as well, but I figured I might as well order something I hadn’t tried before.

There’s something creamy in there too; nicely made.

A nice dish for eating light.

Maybe because the prices are on the high side, it didn’t feel packed..

Anyway, it’s great that even at a restaurant like this you can have interesting culinary experiences. It seems like a good country to travel in. Though I do think it would help if I could speak a bit more Chinese..
