Yasohachi, an izakaya in Kyoto’s Pontocho

Yasohachi is a Kyoto izakaya I’ve probably become a regular at by now.

A place like this

The second floor

This was my first time going up to the second floor, and the atmosphere is rather nice.

Today’s sake

Ginger ale

A glass of wine too

Cabbage

Maybe because I came in summer, the otoshi — the little starter that comes with your seat — has changed.

Today’s standard set

I ordered some sake as well.

Tofu salad

Maybe it’s because this is Kyoto, but the tofu really is delicious.

Dengaku and tebasaki (chicken wings)

The tebasaki here really are excellent, I think.

Tamago kake gohan (rice with a raw egg)

Another one I order every single time.

Buta-toro (pork jowl) topped with kujo negi

Very Kyoto — the spring onion is delicious.

Prawn with tartar sauce

Where on earth do they get prawns this big? The tartar sauce was so rich that I finished off every last bit of what was left.

Liver

Lovely.

Negima and tsukune — chicken-and-leek skewers and chicken meatballs

They do all of it well.

Chashu

I ordered it out of curiosity, and it turns out to be a proper drinking snack.

Pickles

These were more ordinary than I expected…

Quail egg

Tebasaki with tare

The tebasaki were so good that I ordered them with tare as well, and of course they were superb.

A shot taken on the way out

It’s an unremarkable yakitori place, but that very unremarkableness is what keeps drawing me back. I may well end up dropping in again.
