Posting an assortment of things I ate.
Nongshim Moktaekkang
From the name I assumed it was a spin-off of Saewookkang, the Korean prawn snack, but it tasted more like an extension of Onion Rings, the Korean onion snack. The mayonnaise and Cheongyang chili come through, but I could barely taste any moktae, the dried pollack. I do not think there is much reason to go out and buy it.
Spicy Saewookkang
Pretty ordinary..
Potato Chip, Jackson Pepperoni flavour
All sorts of Potato Chip variants have been coming out lately, but none of them really land for me..
Tokunou Melon Squash
Chill it well, pour it into a clear glass, add two spoonfuls of Together vanilla ice cream, and you have a cream soda in seconds. It feels like exactly the product I had been waiting for.
Krispy Kreme..
Very sweet..
Dior
Feels like Dior is really having a moment lately.. It was never quite like this before, was it..
Knotted doughnuts
The flavour took me back to when Dunkin’ was still good. These are well-made doughnuts, and there is a reason they are so popular right now.
Mire Biscuit
Crunchy biscuits with a heavy dusting of lemon powder, which made them a refreshing thing to snack on in summer. The mascot character is a bit odd, though..
Yamazaki Highball, Deep Mizunara Finish
Yamazaki normally has a strong sherry character, but this highball leans hard on the mizunara, which was a bit of a letdown.
Meiho Ham
Apparently it is a ham that is famous around Gifu.
Just sliced it up
Delicious eaten raw, straight as it is. The meat is really springy, so no wonder it is popular.
A Mizuno belt
Nice idea. It is a very thin, small, light belt, but it helps you out when your back is playing up. Most back belts are big, and you do not necessarily need something that big.
The ramen place in Aeon
I order from there now and then, and it is good.
Raspberry wine I bought at the airport
So sweet that it did not feel like alcohol at all. It would probably be better cut with soda water..
Blackwing pencil
They say John Steinbeck, Hemingway, Vladimir Nabokov, John Lennon and others all favoured this pencil, so I bought one.. It certainly feels premium, and the writing feel is very soft and smooth.. There is none of that scratchy feedback, so opinions will probably be divided, but I imagine it was great for people who write for long stretches.. Whether it is worth the price, though, I really do not know.
Shokusai
This is the second beer Asahi has released with a lid that opens all the way.. I had not even shaken it, but the moment I opened it the foam came pouring out, and it tasted nothing like canned beer, exactly like draught instead. If I had let my guard down even a little the table would have been swimming in beer.. The technology really seems to have come a long way..
Country Ma’am Wa-guri Chocolat
The chestnut flavour packed inside the chocolate chip cookie is rich. Cheap and tasty, but the portion is small, so the value for money is on the poor side.. Still, it tastes good, so I would love to see it come out in a big bag.
Italian Seafood Cup Noodle
With garlic and octopus and so on in it, this is a flavour Koreans would like too. It says “summer is seafood” on the cup, but I have no idea what that is supposed to mean.
Daisakyu, made with Mt. Fuji Asagiri Kogen milk
Daisakyu is delicious to begin with, and I bought this one because it is supposed to use good milk, but I cannot really tell whether it got any tastier.
Black Thunder Cacao
Black Thunder normally tastes cheap, but this one has been dressed up a bit and was decent.
The Premium Malt’s Amber Ale
It was ordinary.
Inaniwa chuka soba
An instant ramen made by Sato Yosuke Honpo, the maker famous for Inaniwa udon: noodles with a texture close to udon, in a fragrant Hinai-jidori chicken shoyu soup. It really is good. The great strength of dried noodles is that you can reproduce a shop’s flavour at home, but the price is not that different from eating out either, which feels like a bit of a problem.. I think it works better as a gift than as something you buy for yourself.. I found out about it from Ramen Saiyuki.
Otona no Peel Lemon
Not as good as I had expected.
A yakitori takeaway place called Nihonichi
At a bit over 100 yen a skewer it is reasonable, and it tastes good too. The negima was sold out that day, which was a shame.. There is a wide range of unusual cuts as well (I never expected nankotsu..), and every skewer is at a high level, so it is no surprise the place is popular..
My picks for the day
It was nice to have nankotsu again after a long while.
Galaxy Express 999 beer
When Maetel herself is calling you, there is no way not to buy it, but the taste was pretty middling.. I think it works better as a display piece..
Plums
These plums have a really deep flavour, but this time I bought ones that were too ripe. Next time I will have to pick out some in better shape.
