Ohiradai is the neighbourhood right next to Lake Sanaru. A well-off area, in other words.. I came to visit a good dessert shop in this neighbourhood.
The place
It’s a residential area, but the sun was already blazing in the morning. Japanese summers are hot.
The park
The facilities are far too good to call this just a neighbourhood park. It looked like a place kids would love.
The neighbourhood
Lovely scenery. Living somewhere like this looks pretty good.
The entrance
I got here an hour before opening and I was still third in line. The strange thing about this neighbourhood is that there is nothing around, yet people drive over and queue up.. Which makes me think catchment-area analysis is meaningless around here. Maybe having a proper car park matters more?
Desserts like this
Every one of the desserts is sharply made. Banana bread, banana tatin, gateau chocolat and so on.. This is what makes the shop special: even though these are Western-style desserts, they use rice flour and ferment the dough with a special yeast. (That fermenting is why the shop is called kamoshi, which means “to brew”.) So every dessert shares a rich, almost cheese-like texture. It is remarkable that someone is making desserts with this much originality out in the provinces. This is a level worth queueing for even in the middle of Tokyo, and it made me feel the strength of the region.

Desserts like this
Amakoji bread, blueberry and cassis frangipane, scones and so on..
Desserts like this
Bar canele, canele and so on..
Teas and baked sweets for gifts
There are jams, there are teas, all sorts.
Inside the kitchen
All kinds of alcohol on display. Looking at the list, it is all for the desserts.
Financier
A nice moist financier.
Lemon cake
The sourness came through clearly, which I liked. A lemon that is not sour would be a bit of a letdown.
Amazake
They serve amazake in style. Tasty.
Canele
It feels completely French and yet has a taste all of its own.
Banana bread
I have grown fond of bananas lately, so I end up eating them often.
Banana tatin
Nice to have so many banana desserts..
Amakoji bread
Gateau chocolat
A deep, rich flavour.
Blueberry and cassis frangipane

Bar canele
This is my first canele of this style; it feels like a cross between a Basque cheesecake and a canele.
I never expected to eat desserts this distinctive and this well made in a place like this. But the queue is so long that going often will not be easy..
