Din’s by JIN DIN ROU, the Chinese restaurant inside Hamamatsu’s Entetsu Department Store

Japan has a lot of places where the local economy is genuinely humming, and I suspect it comes down to each region having its own big company to anchor it. In Hamamatsu, that would be the likes of Yamaha and Suzuki. Maybe that’s why the department stores here are pretty well put together too.

There was a Hokkaido fair on, so I took a lap around it.

Then again, I’m not sure you’re allowed to use a name like Kanikosen… what even is capitalism…

The pizzas are frozen, which is presumably how they get away with selling them alongside gelato. It turned out to be a pretty tasty place.

JIN DIN ROU is a dim sum place along the lines of Din Tai Fung, and honestly it’s just an ordinary one. But it’s great for a family visit: the service is good and nothing on the plate is too rich or too spicy.

It left me thinking that this is exactly what a department store restaurant should be.
