Cafe Mu in Motomachi, Yokohama

I was walking through Motomachi in Yokohama when a curious sign caught my eye.

Like this..

Cafe mu

I could hardly believe my eyes.. so up the stairs I went..

The entrance

Cafe mu

Sumibi Baisen Coffee Mu — charcoal-roasted coffee, apparently.

Mu

Cafe mu

The character “Mu” hangs all over the shop.

Inside

Cafe mu

Really nicely put together.

The coffee cups

Cafe mu

“All this?” was my first thought. Maybe it’s the master’s hobby..

The water glass

Cafe mu

Even the glass is no ordinary glass..

Iced coffee

Cafe mu

The ice is black, and that’s because it’s frozen coffee. So even as it melts, the coffee stays just as strong. Lovely idea, this. The only thing is that the serving is far too big.. (it isn’t expensive, mind) and in the end I had no choice but to leave some behind. Anyway, on a really hot summer day a glass of this would hit the spot.

Melon juice

Cafe mu

This one was good too..

The way I see it, this place feels less like a business out to make money and more like something the owner runs as a hobby.. Either way it’s a very distinctive spot, so if you’re ever in the neighbourhood it’s worth dropping in once. Especially in summer..
