For this Kyoto trip I thought it through in advance and worked out the schedule beforehand. I picked the hotel with the routes and all sorts of other things in mind, too.
The lobby of Hotel The Celestine Kyoto Gion
I arrived at Kyoto Station and took the shuttle bus from the stop over by the Hachijo exit to get to the hotel. It isn’t just the Celestine either — quite a lot of hotels run a shuttle bus, it turns out. It only comes once or twice an hour, but if you time it well with your Shinkansen you barely have to wait. Same goes for the trip home.

Not a real one. There are cats dotted all over the inside of the hotel. Hunting them down was fun.

The room
Buildings in Kyoto are low-rise, so you can’t really expect much of a view. Even so, this room had a nice wide bed and I stayed very comfortably.

They even go to the trouble of setting out a lovely tea set like this in the hotel room.

I just came across it while walking, and who knew there was such a modern horumon (grilled offal) place here.. the queue was long, too. You really do have to come in person to get a feel for a place.
