Sake is the best of all medicines
This is the noren of a place called Karasumori Hyakuyaku. It’s supposed to be seriously popular, and sure enough, I showed up at 5:15 and they were already full. How on earth..
Inside
Which means the gentlemen sitting in there have been drinking since five.. let me join you, please..
The popular dishes here
Noting them down for next time..
So I went to the sister shop, Rantan
Right next door there’s a sister shop specialising in highballs. For the record, the staff here were friendly and lovely-looking. Us older guys are weak to a bit of kindness..
Menu
Pretty similar to the main shop’s menu.
A highball
Tasted like there might be some Hakushu in it.. or at least that’s how it felt..
Menu
The menu is unusual – it looks like they’ve gathered nothing but the tastiest dishes from all over Japan.
Otoshi: simmered octopus
Saba no nanbanzuke
Being a highball specialist, they seem to keep the menu to simple dishes.
Fuwafuwa aji fry
The horse mackerel is enormous. Crispy batter, plenty of flesh – properly worth eating.
Miso-dare gyoza
It’s a popular dish at Karasumori Hyakuyaku so I ordered it, but it’s just so-so..
The world’s best karaage
For that name, the flavour is pretty ordinary. There are plenty of famous karaage places out there, after all.. plain old karaage would have been fine as a name, but this one oversells it..
Had an easy drink or two and moved on to the next place.
STAND BY Mi
This is another of Karasumori Hyakuyaku’s sister shops, a standing bar. It’s right nearby. This one looks like it has a good vibe too, but I was in a hurry this time, so skip..
