Akabane Senbero Street, Winter 2021

In case you are wondering what senbero is, it comes from sen-en = a thousand yen and bero = bero-bero, blind drunk: a shop where a thousand yen is enough to get you there. It means a cluster of down-to-earth izakayas, I suppose. Well, a thousand yen would cover a snack or two and about two drinks.

Akabane has become famous lately as a working-class neighborhood thanks to dramas and TV shows, so the senbero street has apparently grown much livelier.

The whole mood is made for drinkers. The famous places were nearly all packed to the rafters, so getting into one was hard.

The atmosphere really is great.

A place called Karaage Bancho, with a bold sign hanging out front that reads: Cheap is a given — the contest is how good it tastes!!

This is the place we ended up going into.. the reason being that back then COVID was still a frightening thing, so we picked the shop that at least looked less crowded.

Karaage is around 380 yen and a highball around 150 yen, so the place lives up to the name senbero. On top of that, 399 yen gets you the super-jumbo size.

Even the 150-yen one is not small, and then there is this size..

They do a really good karaage too. This much definitely lives up to the senbero reputation.
