Riding to Jeollyuri Wharf, 2020

Here’s a record of all the riding I did back in 2020.

The Han River

If you want to go far, it’s best to set off early in the morning. At around 20 km/h, a 100 km round trip takes five hours. Add a bit of sightseeing here and there and it’s night before you know it. On top of that, if you don’t leave in the morning you can’t get any speed on the Han River, so you end up burning far too much time.

The weather was really lovely that day. After being cooped up at home every day, getting out felt like it cleansed my mind.

Partway to Incheon

The Han River path runs all the way to the Ara Waterway, which makes it a great course for exercise.

Once in a while I try one of these too.

Around here there’s a fork where you pick between heading for Ganghwa Island or heading for Incheon, and that day I somehow ended up riding toward Ganghwa. No particular reason – I’ll get to every road eventually, so I figured I’d start with the ones I hadn’t seen yet.

This far out the road is great and there’s nobody around, so 30 km/h is no problem at all. (Not that I was riding that fast…) On the Han River there are so many people that picking up speed causes all sorts of trouble, but out here I could really let loose.

The Han River is packed with people, but go a little way out and a completely rural landscape opens up. To think I lived without knowing this.

The thing is… if it weren’t for COVID, this would be the perfect course for a plate of raw fish before heading home. These days it seems to open and close at random. Such a shame.

I did set off early in the morning, but by lunchtime it was getting hot, and I was curious what was there, so I stopped in at the outlet.

A good full loop. My riding experience is thin so I struggled a bit, but it went reasonably well.
