Mobeom Galbitsal in Gangnam, with jangjorim simmering on the charcoal

I get out to Gangnam pretty often, and passing by I noticed that a place called Mobeom Galbitsal was packed with people no matter when I went. The prices weren’t bad and the meat looked decent too.. But plans around Gangnam Station come together at the last minute, and a place with a queue isn’t easy to get into. So I kept not going, until one day the line looked a bit shorter, and I booked a table and went.

Side dishes

Clean, tidy side dishes.

The butchery room

It’s not in the photo, but they were breaking down the ribs the whole time..

Mobeom…

The menu

Mobumgalbisal

Well.. at 20,000 won per 100 grams it is not exactly cheap, but galbi is fatty anyway, so you get through less of it than you would think. About 30,000 to 40,000 won a head was enough for a decent meal.

The grill

Mobumgalbisal

Turns out you can make your own jangjorim, soy-braised beef.

Mobumgalbisal

It’s a good idea. You’re not meant to eat it while you grill: by the time the meat runs out it has reduced down just right, and it makes a great last snack with your drinks.

Saeng-galbi, the unmarinated ribs

Mobumgalbisal

The quality of the meat is good.

A soup comes too..

Marinated galbi

Mobumgalbisal

Compared with the saeng-galbi it was much the same, if not better. I think that comes down to the meat being the same quality.

Doenjang soup

Mobumgalbisal

It’s not dirt cheap, but you’re not eating cheap meat either, so I was happy.

Norang Tongdak for round two

Mobumgalbisal

The chicken at this place was nothing special and the portion was so generous it was actually a problem.. well, we were only there for a beer, so you just walk into whatever is nearby.. us older guys would rather have a small portion that tastes good..
