I had some business in Sinsa and was passing through the neighborhood when I noticed that a place that used to sell roll cakes had turned into a bakery, so I went in.
The front entrance
I do not quite remember the old name, but it is right below the dessert cafe La Pomme. I asked just in case, and yes, like La Pomme it belongs to the Bsweet On family. La Pomme only opens at 2 pm, so it was a place I had wanted to visit but never managed to. I had assumed the Bsweet On chef was only good at desserts, but apparently he spent several years learning bakery skills as well.. Incidentally, with Mr. Holmes Bakehouse opening right in front of here and so on, bakeries are slowly multiplying in Garosu-gil.
Bread
Even at a glance you could tell the skill was serious. They were baked so beautifully that I could not help buying some. And so the impulse buying began..
Pain au chocolat
They are excellent with croissant-type pastries too. You can see panettone in the back.
Financiers
A level that is hard to find in Gangnam.
Madeleines
Who would have thought a place doing such proper, traditional baked confections would open in Garosu-gil. I was genuinely surprised. And on top of that the prices were not expensive either.
Cakes
The cakes look like the work of a skilled hand. The shop is small, but the range of desserts they carry is considerable. Running it like this cannot be easy, so the chef must really know what he is doing. Every time I have a reason to go to Garosu-gil I will have to buy one of these.
But actually, that day I was on my way to Backen. In the end I bought bread at two bakeries. Backen is a bakery that opened next to Goo Steak; it is a bit dark with a club-like vibe, and it sells mostly high-calorie breads.
Backen’s bacon cheese bread
With this many calories, there is no way it could taste bad. If Etoile is French style, Backen is American style, I suppose. The two shops have completely different personalities, so even though they do business right next to each other, their customers probably do not overlap.
Assorted breads
Assorted breads
If you only ever eat French-style bread, you inevitably start craving other styles. I have eaten plenty of well-behaved bread lately, so once in a while a style like Backen’s is nice too. Though I doubt I could do it often.
