There are a few places in Tokyo I really love, and one of them is Kurofunetei. Tokyo has plenty of more refined or more upscale Western-style restaurants, but for some reason this is the one that clicks with me. The location, the prices, the menu, the atmosphere.. something about it just matches my wavelength.
Yebisu draft beer
Beer tastes really good when you order it at a place like this. It had been an exhausting day, so I needed a glass of healing.
Napolitan spaghetti
It had been a while, so I wanted to try a proper Napolitan from its home turf and ordered it. It is loaded with seafood, so you do not really get that sticky ketchup taste of a typical Napolitan, but the fresh, light flavor kept me coming back for more.
Hayashi rice
A hayashi rice simmered for 24 hours, with a mellowness that leaves nothing to be desired. The omurice is delicious and the hayashi rice is delicious, so these are two dishes you simply cannot skip.
Omurice, large size
I have been coming here for years, but this was the first time I found out: the surcharge for the large size is only 100 yen. The half size is half price, so I assumed the large, which is about 1.5 times bigger, would cost 1.5 times as much, but no! And it is not just the size, the taste is overwhelming too. So glad I went for the omori.
Bouillabaisse, a seafood hot pot
To be honest, I came to Kurofunetei that day just to eat this dish. It is so, so.. brain-meltingly delicious.. and it is one of those dishes that tastes even better in winter. Wondering if it was just me, I asked the people I brought along, and they were all stunned and said it was delicious. So my palate was not off after all.. I think it would be worth visiting Tokyo in winter just to eat this.
