One evening I had no time to cook, and Chinese food did not really appeal either, so while wondering what to eat I decided to compare two taco places in Garosu-gil that had been on my mind for a while.
Taco Chili Chili
The first place is Taco Chili Chili. I have no idea where the main branch is, but this place has been in business for quite a long time. It seems to stay steadily popular.
Taco at Taco Chili Chili
I remember the price being 5,000 won. In terms of volume and taste, it is about as satisfying as a decent hamburger. They do a pretty good job.
Grill5taco
This place was packed too. It has a much more modern vibe than Taco Chili Chili. I think some celebrity owns it or something, but I do not know the details.
Nachos
Unusually, the nachos are unlimited, but they charge for the sauce. Not bad as a beer snack.
French fries
They tasted great when I ate them in the shop, but once I brought them home the flavor dropped off fast. That is how it goes with all fried food.
Tacos
Pricier than Taco Chili Chili, but the quality and volume are decent. You can tell they care about the ingredients and have tried to build a fairly complex flavor. And yet they threw in a pointless amount of pepper to make it deliberately punchy. A lot of people probably like this kind of taste (actually, most people probably do), but for me this cheap pepper flavor is less a kick and closer to pain.
Comparing two taco places I rarely had the chance to visit, side by side, turned out to be a worthwhile experience. If I ever need a taco place in Garosu-gil again, I will confidently head to Taco Chili Chili. For the sake of taste and health I want to eat food without pepper or sugar – and ideally with only a little salt – but finding a place like that is really not easy.
