Food I Picked Up at a Japanese Convenience Store

I have a lot of friends in Tokyo, so lodging is never a worry when I visit. Before heading to where I was staying, I stopped by a convenience store and picked up a few things.

In the fridge I spotted the newly released Suntory The Premium Malt’s “Kaoru Premium”.

Well, I could hardly not drink it. They seem to have changed the hops, and the aroma is definitely better. A bit of a shame that the Suntory beer sold in Korea does not deliver anything like this.

Snacks

Jagarico, the crunchy potato sticks, are good too, but the highlight has to be Cheeza. It is a snack with 53% Camembert cheese in it, and it goes with beer, wine, anything; an almost perfect snack. Something like this costs about 130 yen, so the Korean convenience store industry really needs to take a hard look at itself.

This time I got lucky and cleared out all the Cheeza at Narita Airport; for shopping, Narita seems way better than Haneda. Another surprise at Narita was that they sold Maruchan Seimen instant ramen packs. They take up so much room in a bag that I never dared buy them in the city, but since they were at Narita, I could load up on all sorts of things as carry-on after checking all my luggage. Royce’ chocolate came in so many varieties that I was able to buy plenty of unusual ones too. Once again I think I came home right at the legal weight limit the plane allows, and next time I will try to pack even more, legally of course. My packing skills really are improving by the day.

Maui Chips

I went to a supermarket called Queen’s Isetan, and they had potato chips made in Hawaii, so I gave them a try. The design is cool, but the taste is just so-so.. New-crop potato chips have been starting to appear lately, so I should have gone for those instead.

They are on the hard side.

Cronut

I bought whatever snacks caught my eye as I went around, and among them was the cronut that flew in from New York. Hmm.. the calories are outrageous. Hard to even call it delicious.. Once, sure, for the sake of experience, but I doubt I will eat it a second time.

Seeing it again after so long, it looked really beautiful. If I ever lived in Tokyo again, I would want to live in Asakusa.
