I’ve known the owner of Cheung Kee Noodle House for a while. I heard the POSCO branch had closed around mid-March and he had opened a new shop in Mugyo-dong, so I went to pay a visit.

It turned out to be easier to find than I expected. The place is a decent size and there are lots of restaurants around, so as long as it settles in well it should do fine.

Kitchen

For now, as on the old menu, wonton is the mainstay, but I was told a Chinese chef will be joining soon to put out a mini Hong Kong seafood-restaurant style menu. It’s already delicious, so hearing it’s going to get even better has me really excited.

Maybe because the wontons themselves are so good, these were far tastier than they looked. Juicy all the way through. Who knew they had a side dish like this..

Great wok hei. Wonton may be the signature dish, but they do stir-fried noodles well too.

Gai lan

This came on the house as well, thank you so much! It looked like the owner was giving away far too much for the opening, and I felt both grateful and a little guilty.

Shaoxing wine

For some reason Shaoxing wine never seems to have caught on in Korea, but it’s sweet and aromatic and goes wonderfully with lightly seasoned Chinese food. When Cheung Kee first opened there wasn’t much of a drinks menu, but at some point that changed, and I’m really glad I can now enjoy it alongside food this good.

The sign

The sign from the Hongdae shop is here now. With food and atmosphere this good, I’m sure business will keep going strong. I really can’t wait for the new menu.
