It is not much of a principle, but I always pick out my own Valentine’s Day chocolates. When I lived in Japan, some novel chocolate came out every year and choosing was half the fun, but in Korea it is not quite at that level. So this time I bought Royce’ potato chip chocolate, which suits a middle-aged guy’s palate.

While I was at it, some nama chocolate too.. but after always seeing the duty-free prices, buying it at a shop in Korea turned out to be three or four times as expensive. Hmm.. once a year is one thing, but more than that seems like a bit of a stretch..

Nama chocolate

The way it melts smoothly in your mouth is the whole point of nama chocolate. There are a lot more shops selling good chocolate in Korea these days, but I cannot recall any of them selling nama chocolate, which is this fussy to store.

Potato chips

Korea does not have many kinds of potato chips, while in Japan the number and the volume are overwhelming. Royce’ potato chip chocolate can safely be called the pinnacle even among those. At first I wondered who would eat something this weird and expensive, but it seems there are more people, or rather more middle-aged guys, who like both chocolate and potato chips than you would think.

Piaf chocolates

Ending with Royce’ felt a little lacking, so I got some Piaf as well.

They are made with good ingredients. But maybe it is just a matter of taste, a few of them I liked and a few were just so-so.

The chocolate flavor is rich. Rich right up to the point where you start to worry it might be too much. There were pieces of chocolate embedded in it, so if you like this style, I think you would enjoy it even more.

And with that, this year’s regular events are safely over.
