I heard there was a restaurant popular with the locals in Oshiage, where the Tokyo Skytree stands, so I went to check it out. Udon and Kyushu cuisine are the mainstays here.

Lunch is said to be good too, and it also looks like a nice spot for a casual drink in the evening. It is the kind of ordinary place you could find in any neighbourhood, though, so it does not seem worth going out of your way for.

This year’s Koshu wine

It was the season, so I gave it a try. It is a style similar to Beaujolais Nouveau, but I regretted ordering it. Should have just gone with a highball..

Shishimaru salad

A salad loaded with pumpkin.. hmm.. this was not really what I was after. I got the feeling that ordering the regular stuff might be a better bet than the Kyushu-style dishes.

Otoshi

Chikuwa tempura stuffed with cheese

Feels a bit like junk food. Sure enough, it is meant as a drinking snack.

Maguro zuke

Tuna marinated in soy sauce, apparently a Kyushu speciality. It was decent enough.

Toriten

Another Kyushu speciality, of course. The charm is that it tastes a little different from karaage.

Udon

I ordered udon to finish, and the noodles were seriously impressive. They said they get their noodles delivered every day from the udon shop run by the owner’s father. The other dishes were not bad either, but the udon alone makes this place well worth it. Seems like a good spot to drop by whenever a craving for udon hits.
