I’ve been eating at home almost every day lately, so whenever I had a spare moment I went around the dessert shops. Writing a separate post for each one felt like a chore, so here they all are in one go.
Cakes from Au Bon Vieux Temps
I feel like this place needs no introduction.. Au Bon Vieux Temps sells some of the very best cakes in Tokyo. The only downside is that the cakes sell out in no time.
Mango short cake from the Shilla Hotel
They use fully ripe Jeju mangoes, so there is no way this cake could taste bad. The one flaw is that it is rather pricey.
Apple pie from La Patisserie de Natsu in Asakusa
La Patisserie de Natsu specialises in fruit tarts. Having a cake shop of this calibre in the neighbourhood is something to be grateful for.
Mont Blanc
It looked so good that I had to buy it, and sure enough it tasted as good as it looked.
Seasonal tart from Qu’il fait bon
One of these is a must every time the season changes. Always delicious.
Pumpkin tart from Qu’il fait bon
I bought this cake to mark Halloween, and it tastes far better than it looks.
Pineapple cakes I brought back from Taiwan
It turns out pineapple cakes are not all the same; the taste varies wildly depending on the maker. The ones I had eaten before were all pretty underwhelming, but this brand was on the tasty side.
Smoked firefly squid
Not a cake, but it was pretty good in its own right. Lives up to its reputation as a Toyama speciality.
Baumkuchen from Nenrinya
It’s a baumkuchen specialist with a shop in a department store, and the cake is wonderfully moist. The only other places I can think of at this level are Jiichiro and Club Harie.
The Montebello series from Pierre Hermé
These are the cakes made with pistachio. As expected, the standard is high.
