There are a few restaurants I can confidently recommend to anyone visiting Tokyo, and Kurofunetei, a yoshoku restaurant in Ueno, is one of them. I dropped by after work, and maybe because it was late, the place was nearly empty. Walking straight into a restaurant where people usually wait an hour in line is one of the perks of living in the neighborhood.
Omurice
For once I ordered the regular size, but with three guys eating it vanished in no time. So we ordered another one..
Hayashi rice
This one was not so popular that night. Personally, I like to order half portions of the omurice and the hayashi rice and eat the omurice with the demi-glace sauce.
Bouillabaisse
Even in summer, the seafood is generous. It was a little less of a shock than when I had it in winter, but it was still really delicious.
It turns out they stay open quite late. Last order is at 10, so you can walk in around 9 with time to spare. I had no idea a place with such long lines during the day would be this empty in the evening. From now on I will probably only come late at night.
