For dessert I moved on to a place called Higashi-Mukojima Coffee-ten (東向島珈琲店). I had heard it is famous for its rare cheesecake.
The front entrance
A cafe with a clean, tidy atmosphere. The owner seemed young and full of enthusiasm.
Rare cheesecake
It looks like tofu or ice cream. One bite and the smoothness was out of this world.
Hoshigaki (dried persimmon) tart
It is a tart made with dried persimmons, and the sweetness is kept nicely in check so it never feels heavy, while the flavours of all the different ingredients really come through. It felt like I was looking at the pinnacle of Japanese-style tarts. A cake this good could easily rank among the best in Tokyo.
Mikan juice
Freshly squeezed from real fruit, and it tasted pretty good.
Coffee
This was excellent too. I never imagined a neighbourhood cafe could be this good. I need to do a bit more research into the good places to eat around Higashi-Mukojima.
