There are countless sundaeguk joints in Seoul, but when I sat down and counted the ones that really deserve to be called great, there were fewer than I expected. To qualify, a place needs history and a name, not just good food, and Seocho Namsunnam Sundaeguk is one of the few. It’s near the Bangbang Sageori crossing.
The sundae set meal
It’s a phone photo, so it looks a bit rough. When I went a few years back it didn’t do much for me, but tasting it this time, they clearly know what they’re doing. The broth arrives at a rolling boil and tastes deep and rich, and the bowl is loaded. It really does live up to its reputation as one of the great sundaeguk houses.
A close-up of the solids
Apart from the sundae itself, which tasted factory-made, I was happy with all of it. It’s the kind of place that earns all the love it gets from the office workers nearby.
Enoteca, newly opened in Apgujeong
After the sundaeguk I drifted around and somehow ended up at Enoteca. They were running an opening discount and the prices were really good. I’d love it if they were always opening-day prices, but that’s obviously not how it works, so there’s no telling when I’ll be back…
