Sushi Ume in Ichon-dong

Ume is a sushi place in Ichon-dong. There are a lot of Japanese people living in that neighborhood, so there are quite a few Japanese restaurants, sushi places included. Apparently Manager Park, who used to work at Kiku – which was hugely popular to begin with, hence the constant long line – opened this branch just around the corner. Maybe because it had only just opened, it was easier to get a reservation here than at Kiku. I carved out a bit of time on the weekend and went.

This was such a long time ago that the names of the sushi are pretty hazy. So let me give you the overall picture of the place up front: for a sushi place the prices aren’t high, the service is on the generous side, and if you order sashimi plus nihonshu instead of sushi you’ll have an even more satisfying meal. Of course, in that case you’d need four people to fill a table. The location is a bit awkward to make a special trip for, but it’s a good place to drop by when you have a sudden huge craving for sushi. And while it’s good value for money, if you take the price out of the equation there are definitely things lacking. Don’t go expecting ecstatic sushi that unfolds a whole seascape in your mouth..

I think they’d have made more if I’d asked, but I stopped there. I ate well and left full, but this was not long after I’d been to Kyubey in Ginza, so I wasn’t all that impressed…
